Edmund had decided that he couldn’t just stay at the Cair that day, doing paperwork and holding court and generally acting every inch the King he was. He needed a break, needed to get out and breathe the fresh, beautiful, enchanting air of Narnia and just be a young boy out enjoying himself on a nice day. So he had left a note on his desk, then he’d changed clothes into something far simpler that would not betray his standing and rank as a King of Narnia at first glance. Of course he carried his twin blades with him, but more out of habit then anything else. He felt safe with them around his waist, one on either side of his belt. Even now, safe in Aslan’s Country, he armed himself with his twin blades whenever he left the Cair. His outfit included a hooded cloak that was a gray-ish green color and was held in place by a simple leaf brooch. He carried a small bag beneath the cloak that held a lunch which had been hard won from the cooks in the Cair’s kitchens and a few other items. He pulled up the hood as he exited his chambers by way of one of the Cair’s many secret passages. This one led him to the courtyard which he crossed to the stables and found a stable boy whom he asked to find a bridle for him to use on one the Horses in the stable when a voice belonging to a friend who had long ago died coming from behind him startled him, “Edmund, I know what you’re doing! I remember well the days you would dress just like this and slip down here to the stables and collect a bridle which you would place on my head and then lead me out of the stables and into the courtyard where you’d mount up and we’d head out. If you’re planning a secret excursion, I beg of you, let me be your mount once more as I was so long ago.”
He turned and laughed, of course Phillip, his Phillip would be here, of course he would be, and of course he’d be young again, just as he was when they first became friends! “Phillip!” The young, Just King exclaimed as he whirled around to face the Talking Horse who had once been his riding teacher, his most trusted non-kin confidante, his companion, his friend and his mount. “I’m so glad to see you again! Of course I’ll ride out on you, who else did you think I’d ride after I heard your voice, good my friend?” Edmund laughed at the same instant Phillip snorted and the two sounds brought back so many memories from a time so long ago the memories had begun to become misty but now came clearly into focus again. At that moment the stable boy returned with a bridle, which he handed to Edmund saying, “here is the bridle as you requested, my lord. Enjoy your ride.” Since the Just king was in ‘disguise’ the stable boy did not bow as low as he should have, but that was exactly why the Just king was in disguise, he needed a break from the court, from royal behaviour and protocol, from all the bowing and the scrapping, he needed a day when he was just Edmund the young man again, not Edmund the king. He thanked the stable boy with a simple nod of his head then entered Phillip’s stall and with quick, practiced, graceful movements had the bridle in place in less then a minute.
After a quick brush of his fingers over a horseshoe mounted on the wall by the stable doors for what reason Edmund knew not, the disguised king and his mount exited the stables. Then Edmund swung himself up onto his horse’s back with such ease that it seemed like it was only yesterday that he had mounted Phillip for the hunting excursion that had led him and his Royal siblings back into England for the first time. He said, addressing his horse in a low voice meant for Phillip’s ears only, “We make for Dancing Lawn. It’s perfect for a picnic and multiple hours of relaxation.”
As soon as they passed though the gates of Cair Paravel and over the drawbridge, Edmund tightened his grip and nudged Phillip’s sides, signalling him to move into a gallop. “Let’s just enjoy today, Phillip. There will be precious few days like this again for a while if Peter decides to get angry about my little unscheduled excursion.” He leaned forward and the wind he was riding headlong into blew back his hood. The Just King laughed for pure joy at being out with only his Horse for companionship, Phillip really was Edmund's horse just as Edmund was once Phillip's Boy, but the sound was pulled from his lips and into the wind before he could really enjoy the sound of it.
Soon enough they were near Dancing Lawn and Edmund sat up straight and pulled his hood back up. The moment they reached the edge of Dancing Lawn, the young man who was also King of Narnia (although currently disguised) pulled on his reigns and said, “whoa Phillip. We ave reached our destination and it is time to enjoy our day.” He dismounted, and as he did, he loped the reigns over Phillip’s head. The moment his feet touched solid ground, Edmund moved to stand in front of his horse’s head and with the same grace and quickness he had shown when putting the bridle on Phillip, he removed it within two minutes. Then he rubbed Philip’s neck and said, “Go, enjoy the lush grass, eat your fill. Relax. We’ll be here for some time yet.” At his mount’s nod, he walked over to the middle of the grassy field and sat down with his back to the direction which he had just come from. He removed the satchel he’d been wearing under his cloak and opened it to grab a book titled, The Collected Rulings of King Edmund the Just, Chief Justice of Narnia, etc. To most people, it would seem odd that this King was reading a book filled with judgements in long past legal cases he himself had settled, but Edmund was always one for history and this book was what he’d chosen to bring with him to this spot. He was soon so absorbed in his reading he didn’t hear the sound of hoof beats coming from behind him.
